Post Birthday Roundup
Tuesday. The 13th. My Birthday.
I worked.
Not the most fun thing, going to work on your birthday. I should have taken the day off, except I had a heap of stuff that needed to be done.
Finally 5pm rolled around, and I made my way home on Melbourne’s fabulous public transport system. Louis was waiting at home to wish me Happy Bday, and then told me he’d booked us dinner at Koh Samui, in Middle Park.
I’d been there before, twice. The first time it was fantastic, and then the chef left. They got a new chef, and served up that ‘modern’ thai fusion shit that I was less than impressed with. I never went back.
I bit my tongue and hoped for the best, and luckily something went my way – they’d changed chefs again. (Bearing in mind my visits to this place are spaced about 2 yrs apart) and the food was once again, fantastic.
We ate until we were stuffed, then ate some more until it was all gone.
Then we waddled back to the car and drove home.
Wednesday. Valentines Day.
I worked again. Found out all the good movies were booked out for the good Gold Class sessions, bummer.
Managed to get through the day, then Louis and I just had a nice home-cooked dinner.
Today.. Friday.
Rudely awoken to the sound of banging on the front door. The courier!
I got some clothes on and answered the door, and got the parcel.
Went back to bed, and gave the parcel to Louis – this was my birthday present that was supposed to be delivered 3 days prior. Stupid slack ebay people.
It was… a Hugo Boss wallet. Louis has a pic of it on his blog, which you’ve probably already seen. It’s big, but i’ll get used to it. I just can’t put my wallet in my side pocket anymore.
What did I get Louis for Valentines Day? Nothing, yet.
13 Days to go..

Santa came… and so did I
Christmas is over. Hopefully you all celebrated and had fun in one way or another, spending time with those who are special to you.
Also remembering that it’s not just about the presents, but the thought and meaning that went into buying that present for you. – Though that doesn’t quite work when mum gives you underwear (yet again), which leaves you wondering if she thinks you still poop your pants 26 years on.
…(And for the record, No, I havent. Well.. at least not since that horrid evacuative vindaloo episode a few years ago.)
ANYWAY, Louis and I went shopping at Highpoint a couple of days before christmas, and I bought myself a new pair of shoes. They were having an ‘open 24 hours’ sale to draw the crowds in, and it worked quite well – at 2am you could hardly find a park anywhere.

They’re quite comfortable (though I haven’t worn them outside yet coz it’s been raining, and… they’re nice and shiny and clean and new still). And I found them in the most unlikely of places – a skateboard shop, which I was just browsing through whilst waiting for Louis to finish watching some guys playing some zombie arcade game at timezone.
I still miss the shopping malls in KL that absolutely DWARF ours in size. For example – I can get around Highpoint in 1.5 hrs, but I need 5+ hours at 1Utama. *sigh*…
6 months to go. And counting. AND saving. Ka-chingggg!
Oh, and what sweet thoughtful present did I get Louis I hear you ask? I got him a cooking apron. It says ‘Hot’ on it. I have a photo of him wearing it, but he didn’t want me to post it up.
I also got him a funky short sleeve shirt, that has tie thingys on the sleeves to keep them neat when you roll the sleeves up. It looks funky!.. and he liked it.
What’d you guys get?

Chateau du’ MaXius
Well it’s all fun here at Chateau du’ MaXius, where Louis’ parents (and Grandma) seem to be having lots of fun.
I think his siblings are bored. And I also think Louis is going to have an embolism pop before the week is over.
I saw red earlier, when his mum took to the nice shiny black oil coating I have painstakingly created on my wok with STEEL WOOL. It’s hard to convey frustrations when I can’t speak the Mandarin, and the only word I do know – Cheebye – isn’t quite appropriate.
So I have decided i’m going to learn. I’ll start off with one of those books, and if that doesn’t work, a course. I have to admit the fun factor of understanding everything that’s happening yet pretending to be the english-only speaking white boy is extremely inviting, but it’ll be a long while before i’m that good.
Sleeping alone is also something i’n not used to. Though it’s kinda fun to have the whole bed to myself, i’d still rather be fighting for my small portion when Louis, in his dreamstate, decides to hog the lot.
Great Ocean Road trip on the weekend, hopefully everything will work out well.
I’ll keep you posted.

Nocturnal Musings
It’s 3:14 am.
For some reason my subconscious deemed it necessary to wake the rest of me up, instead of letting me sleep through until my alarm rudely awakens me for work at 7.30.
The wind is blowing hard outside, and I can hear the occasional ‘clink’ of the gate latch as it protests against the force. I also notice the rhythmical drumming of rain on the roof tiles. Strange kind of Spring weather, even for Melbourne. No frost on my breath, thank god I left the central heating on by accident.
A car drives past, brakes, then accelerates off again. I look at Louis; wrapped up in the dooner beside me, sleeping soundly, oblivious to the cold outside. And i’m sitting here wide awake, staring at the roof, thinking about a hundred different things.
We had our 12 Month Anniversary last night, and I took Louis to a thai restaurant called Lemongrass, in Carlton.
The ambience was nice, though a little on the dark side – made it hard to take photos.
The food was quite tasty, albeit the duck curry was a bit runny and bland. I guess that’s one of the ‘cons’ of being able to cook well yourself – when you eat out, it has to be exceptional to match up (or surpass).
The Chill stir fry beef was nice and tender, and although the quantity of chilli through the dish had us worried at the start, it wasn’t as hot as we thought (or hoped?).
The spring rolls were tiny for the price, but yummy all the same. Except that last crunchy little sucker who escaped Louis’ fork and ended up under the neighbouring diner’s chair. Nobody saw – mood lighting, remember?
I think the Tom Yum soup was the best choice we had out of our selection, and I could have done with a couple more bowls of that.
- I have pictures, but i’m not leaving the safe haven of this dooner to fetch my camera and download the pics. -
In some ways, it doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I met Louis, but in other ways it seems like i’ve known him for far longer. In all honesty, I don’t remember having such a synergy with any of my past bf’s. We each know how the other ticks. Scary, sorta - having someone who understands me.
Anyway, i’m going to try to get some more sleep, I can already see daybreak peeping through the blinds.
Zzzz.

Delicious fattening Laksa!
I made laksa for Louis and myself tonight, with an old recipe I got off a friend ages ago. (Never trust a thin cook!) I scribbled it on a scrap of notepaper at the time, and I haven’t lost it yet. But now that i’ve said that, I probably will.

I brought out the special ’stix for this one.
Ingredients:
- 3x cans of Campbells Chicken Consummate (& 1 can of water)
Or
2x 1 Litre bricks of Chicken Stock - 500g Hokkien Noodles
- 1x Packet of Laksa Paste Mix
- 1x 400ml can of Coconut Cream
- ½ packet of Dried shrimp (the tiny ones)
- 1x Onion
- 4x Chicken Thigh Fillets (Skin off)
- 1x Egg White (discard yolk)
- 1x tbsp Red Rice Wine (or dry cooking sherry)
- 3x heaped tbsp Cornflour
- 1x packet of Fish Cake, sliced
- 1x packet of Fish Balls, halved
- 1x packet of Fried Beancurd Squares, sliced diagonally
- 1x bunch of Bok Choy
- 3x Lap Cheongs, sliced
- Small handful of Bean Shoots
- 1x bunch Coriander, chopped
- 1 bunch Shallots/Spring Onions, sliced
- Peanut Oil
Method:
Chop the chicken thigh into bite size pieces.
Mix the egg white and rice wine with the cornflour. Combine with the chicken, then cover and chill for a few hours.
Dice the onion fine, then add to heated peanut oil. Add dried prawns, lap cheong and laksa paste, and fry for 2 min.
Add stock, bring to boil, add coconut cream and simmer for 15 min.
Heat a pot of salted water, and boil the chicken pieces, a small amount at a time.
Add chicken, fishcake, fishballs and some of the coriander, simmer an extra 10 min.
Add beancurd, simmer another 10 min.
In boiling water, quickly blanch the bok choy.
Then heat the hokkien noodles in the water, and get bowls to assemble.
Put some of the hokkien noodles in each bowl, then the bok choy, then the laksa.
Add garnish (the shallots and coriander).
Serve. (and eat.)
Get hubby to do the dishes, with a promise of some hanky panky later on.

Uni’s: They aint what they used to be..
Alternatively titled, “I want my weekend back”.
Going to Uni costs a shitload of green, and it’s all for what, I ask?
Local students pay a lot. Overseas students pay a lot more.
Lecturers seem to teach both groups ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. (I wish I could get paid as much as they do just to hand out a few photocopies lecture notes and tell people to ‘read chapter 7‘).
They’ll probably argue back with some bullshit about ‘laying down the basics, then promoting disciplined self learning’, but is that really what they should be getting paid for?
For that amount of money i’d expect to be taught the subject, properly. I want class discussions, examples on the board, and most importantly – any problems that individuals are having to be ‘worked through’ with the rest of the class.
But sadly, no.
Louis and I spent the whole weekend – and I don’t just mean just the normal waking hours – trying to finish off his database assignment. Granted, he did have two weeks to do this, but he didn’t think it was this ‘big’ (nor did I at a glance) and he was busy getting his other assignments done, concurrently.
The project was along the lines of creating a bunch of database tables (and linking them) to create a nomination / voting application for some theoretical academy awards, with real data.
So quite a few hours were spent on working out the tables needed, then the fields, then what links to what. Then more time getting enough information to fill all these tables. Just for fun, the database for usage was an Oracle database. That means it’s not a free thing to download, just to make it more painful. (How do you test what you’ve created?)
Luckily we (well not really me, personally) use Oracle at work, so we went and fetched my laptop from work. Thank god for VPN, I was able to hook up from home to one of the development databases.
Then came more fun, trying to get the data out for the queries we had to run for the assignment questions, and lastly, making some ‘creation’ files that the lecturer runs to make sure you did everything right.
Oh, and almost forgot – copious amounts of fucking step-by-step documentation, just to make sure you know what you’re doing. (Ha! As if, I had NFI!)
We only finished about half of it. I had no idea how to make triggers or stored procedures, and we had to deal with some weird Oracle idiosyncracies in the process too.
If Louis gets a bad mark, that lecturer is gonna taste rubber. (Off my car tyre.)

Baby’s makin me fat.
Another weekend, another curry. But that’s ok, because there’ll just be more of me to love.
This is what we cooked tonight, it’s Beef curry in Sweet Peanut Sauce.

It was super-nummy.
Screw copyright, if you want to know the ingredients, here they are:
Ingredients:
- 500ml Coconut Milk (or 1x 400ml can and a splash of water)
- 4 Tbsp Red Curry Paste
- 3 Tbsp Fish Sauce
- 2 Tbsp Palm Sugar or Brown Sugar
- 2 Lemongrass stalks, bruised
- 500g Rump Steak, cut into thin strips
- 75g ground Roasted Peanuts
- 2 Fresh Red Chillies, sliced
- 5 Kaffir Lime Leaves, torn
- Salt & Ground Black Pepper
- Thai Basil Leaves, to garnish
- 2 Salted Eggs, to serve
- Pinch of Love
Method:
Put half the coconut milk into a wok or large pan. Heat the milk gently, stirring constantly, until it begins to boil and separate.
Add the red curry paste and cook over a medium heat until fragrant. Add fish sauce, sugar, and lemongrass.
Continue to cook until the colour of the curry sauce deepens.
Add the remaining coconut milk and bring back to the boil. Add the beef and ground peanuts. Cook for 10 – 12 minutes.
Add the sliced chillies and torn kaffir lime leaves and adjust seasoning. Simmer 2 min, then transfer to a serving dish, and garnish with the basil leaves and salted eggs.
Serve with rice, duh.
(Oh, and roti, nyumnums)
